Even if it had matched your imagination, this film could’ve been average. From the moment Shakthi attempts to steal the money, you know how the story is going to play out. The predictability though boring is at least bearable to a certain extent. Not only is the one-liner’s potential never tapped into, but the makers take the juice out of this betrayal by supplementing it with rhyming dialogues and unabashed predictability. But Johnny cannot excite you even if its characters jumped out of the screens to chase you down. It is a known fact that it will not end well for him, but the unpredictable manner in which his manipulation and gimmicks unfold is what makes the viewing experience worthwhile. The lead character of the series, Ganesh Gaitonde has betrayed many mentors to get where he is. Take Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane’s Sacred Games for instance. The journey of uncovering the man behind their murders forms the crux of the film.Ī man who betrays his gang is a one-line that always holds the potential to be so much more. Soon, many other partners of this vicious gang find themselves dropping like flies. But all hell breaks loose as the gang finds Siva murdered. A thirst for money urges Shakthi to steal from his very own partners and right after his calculated heist, he plans to leave town with his girlfriend Ramya (Sanchita Shetty). His gang members include Jai (Prabhu), Siva, Prakash, and Ram. Shakti (Prashanth) is a part of a gang of gamblers who run a club in town. The film borrows a few story tracks from Johnny Gaddar. The film’s execution, screenplay, and direction are just as shoddy as the actor’s performance, leaving you truly disappointed. But in this film, Prashanth’s performance is so self-restrained and amateur that you almost forget that he has a background in acting. Most of his films were out and out mainstream formulaic entertainers but his acting in these ventures was reasonable enough to be compared with the likes of Vijay and Ajith. The film marks the comeback of Prashanth, who was once the proclaimed ‘chocolate boy’ of Tamil cinema. Vetriselvan, Johnny is an action drama film starring Prashanth, Sanchita Shetty, and Prabhu in lead roles.
